TALLAHASSEE, Fla.
- Florida A&M University (FAMU) has hired a new compliance officer for the university’s Department of Music.

Deirdre McRoy, a research associate in the university’s Office of Retention, will begin the new position on May 13, 2013.

McRoy has worked in the Office of Retention since 2008. She began her career at FAMU as an adjunct professor for cost accounting.  She has worked as an internal auditor, coordinator for administrative affairs and as an assistant university registrar for two years where she supervised registration and student records staff.

In her new post, McRoy said she wants to ensure all students involved in the Department of Music programs comply with established procedures and guidelines.

Richard Givens, chair of the search committee for the compliance officer, said McRoy did an outstanding job during the interview process and was very knowledgeable about the new guidelines that were put in place to govern the Marching “100” and had some ideas of her own that would better ensure compliance.

“During the interview process, I got the impression that she would take a really hands-on approach to ensuring that all of the rules of the department were followed,” Givens said.  “Her experience in the registrar's office, retention and administrative services made her a strong candidate for the job.”

The Department of Music Compliance Officer will report to the Special Assistant to the President for Anti-Hazing Bryan Smith.

McRoy earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration from FAMU.  McRoy will be responsible for ensuring overall compliance of the Department of Music, specifically bands and ensembles with university policies and programs and the Department of Music guidelines specified in approved handbooks. She will also be responsible for overall safety and educational programs for the Department of Music.
